TIB's TDM1 2016-'17 Awards

MVP, Youngster of the Year, First Team, ...

With the Top Division Men 1 season boiling down to the Finals between Gent Hawks and title defender Waregem we have again contacted the coaches, assistant coaches and/or scouters from all TDM1 teams and a couple of journalists and asked for their votes for this season's TDM1 awards.

Last year's results can be found here.

So without further ado...

This year's TIB's TDM1 Player of the Year award goes to:

François Lhoest (BC Ninane)

Despite his team finishing only 12th in the Final Standings of the Regular season - and thus missing out on the playoffs - it can't be denied that Lhoest had an amazing season, leading the league in both scoring and rebounding and therefore it didn't come as a surprise when Lhoest received 60% of the votes, easily staying ahead of the runner-up Nick Celis (25% of the votes). Undoubtedly, without him Ninane would've been hard-pressed to avoid that last spot in the standings. His performances clearly haven't gone unnoticed by the Pro's from the Euromillions Basketball League either as the former Belgian Youngster of the Year (2006-'07) has signed a deal with Liège Basket and the now 32 year old will regain his spot amongst the Belgian elites next season as a semi-professional.

Lhoest had his best game this season in a victory against Gistel-Oostende in early November when he exploded for 38 points (a personal season high), with 15-23 FG shooting and adding 18 rebounds, 6 assists & 4 steals.

This year we also decided to elect a Youngster of the Year since Top Division Men 1 is the place where a lot of our talented youngsters get the chance to show their skills while they hope to be called up by the Pro's. To be elegible for this award we only took into account players who were born in 1994 or later.

This year's TIB's TDM1 Youngster of the Year award goes to:

Tim Lambrecht (KB Gistel-Oostende)

Although the youngsters from Gistel-Oostende got off to a slow start of the season and looked like they would have to battle to avoid the playdowns they eventually managed to finish in the 10th spot in the Final Standings of the Regular season and Lambrecht's play was definitely a major factor for them as he collected some excellent performances in the process. None the less it was a close call as he received 30% of the votes and got some stiff competition from both Sam Hemeleers (20% of the votes) and Darnell Snyers (also 20% of the votes). One thing no one can deny, the lanky lefty can flat out score. Whether it's inside using his length or mid-range with the nice pull-up jumper or an assortment of left-handed hooks and floaters or even from behind the arc, it's all part of his offensive repertoire. Defensively the youngster still has a lot of things to work on though, not in the least his physical frame. None the less, his talent is undeniable and he has deservedly already played 16 games (as of May 6th) in the Euromillions Basketball League with BC Oostende and is expected to further increase his appearances and minutes in the coming seasons.

In TDM1 Lambrecht had his best performance this season in an overtime loss at Oxaco on February 4th when he finished with 39 points (14-19 FG shooting) and added 16 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals & 2 blocks in 45 minutes of action.

And now for our selected teams. We asked the coaches and scouts to select their three favorite line-ups with only one criteria: the line-ups had to have 1 big man (F/C), 1 point guard (PG) and 3 wing players (SG/F). The players who got selected by the coaches in their first team received 3 points, those in the second team 2 points and those from the third team received 1 point. In the end we counted all the votes for each player and came to the following line-ups:
